The City of Tuscaloosa officially unveiled the new Bowers Park Pickleball Courts on Monday, March 23. The new courts represent a significant investment in community recreation and further position Tuscaloosa as a destination for active, outdoor experiences.

Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox, Councilor John Faile and Tuscaloosa County and Recreation Authority Executive Director Brian Davis spoke during the ceremony, highlighting the impact of the project on the community and future generations.

“I grew up in Idlewood, not far from here, and rode bikes to Bowers with my friends all the time as a kid,” said Mayor Walt Maddox. “It's memories like those that help drive our investments in quality of place for the next generations, and for today's residents of all ages.”

The newly completed Bowers Park Pickleball Courts features 19 courts, three of which are covered, along with a new outdoor restroom facility, updated lighting and enhanced security cameras, creating a welcoming and accessible environment for players of all skill levels.

“In addition to the pickleball courts, I am pleased to share that a monument for J Oviatt Bowers has been re-added to the park,” said Councilor John Faile. “We have accomplished a lot here, but we are just getting started.”

Part of the broader Elevate Tuscaloosa initiative, which began construction in 2025, this reflects the city’s ongoing commitment to enhancing public spaces, quality of life for residents and quality of place for visitors.

“I am thrilled at the enthusiasm of our community's pickleball players,” Tuscaloosa County and Recreation Authority Executive Director Brian Davis said. “Our pickleball courts are almost always full and it brings me joy that our community and visitors are able to enjoy these amenities.”

With the addition of the Bowers Park Pickleball Courts, Tuscaloosa now offers 30 public outdoor courts, and continues to expand its offerings for outdoor recreation, providing visitors with new ways to experience the destination’s vibrant community and active lifestyle.
