The Alabama Crimson Tide will tip off against the Arizona Wildcats on Saturday, December 13 at Legacy Arena in the fifth edition of the C.M. Newton Classic.
“We are excited to return to Birmingham and face one of the premier programs in the country in Arizona,” said Nate Oats, Alabama men’s basketball head coach. “The C.M. Newton Classic provides an amazing atmosphere and we are looking forward to playing in front of Tides fans while honoring Coach Newton’s legacy and the impact he made on the University of Alabama and our sport.”
“The opportunity to play against a great program like Alabama at the C.M. Newton Classic is something we are looking forward to this season,” said Tommy Lloyd, Arizona men’s basketball head coach. “They have been among the best teams in the country under Coach Oats and it promises to be an exciting game in a great atmosphere in Birmingham.”
The C.M. Newton Classic honors former Alabama men’s basketball head coach, C.M. Newton. Newton was not only known for his coaching accolades but the impact he made on and off the court. Newton stood for courage and was the first coach to put forth an all-Black starting five and recruited players such as Wendell Hudson.
“This is an outstanding match up that promises to be an exciting game in Birmingham,” said Mike Underwood, CEO of TriGreen Equipment. “The C.M. Newton Classic continues to make a difference off the court through the Legacy Builder campaign that highlights local organizations that work to continue C.M. Newton’s legacy and what he stood for. TriGreen Equipment is proud to be involved in a game that not only provides excitement for fans but makes a larger impact in the Birmingham community.”
Beyond the court, Knight Eady, game owner and operator will host the fourth Legacy Builder campaign. The Legacy Builder campaign focuses on highlighting nonprofits in the Birmingham area who are building a legacy focused on diversity and inclusion initiatives, just as C.M. Newton did. Last year’s winners received $2,500 and a high-quality PSA video for the nonprofit’s use. The four winners from 2024 were Community of Hope Health Clinic, College Choice, Breakthrough Birmingham and AM3N. The Legacy Builder campaign application will open later this fall.
