Tough Mudder (www.ToughMudder.com), which is owned by Spartan Race (www.Spartan.com), announced multiple changes to its long-standing race formats for the 2024 season.  Most notably, the obstacle race brand is eliminating separate 5k, 10k, and 15k products beginning this year and instead will produce a single long-format course known as "Tough Mudder", which will be 10+ miles long.

“Tough Mudder has established a great brand and loyal following in the OCR space over the past 11 years,” stated Spartan founder Joe De Sena.  “Our decision to make the change was based on our belief in Tough Mudder’s underlying mission. The intrinsic value of Tough Mudder has always come from breaking through perceived limits and doing something incredibly tough - which we did not think we could consistently do with untimed events at shorter distances.”

Other changes to Tough Mudder will include new obstacle innovations and the return of some old favorites. Tough Mudder finishers will be rewarded with the brand’s iconic orange headband and new collectible challenge-style coins, commemorating marquee obstacles from the event.

The new 10+ mile Tough Mudder format will not be timed, focusing instead on teamwork and overcoming challenges both mental and physical. Athletes wishing for timed racing can compete in the brand’s three Endurance Series formats:  8-hour Tough Mudder Infinity, 12-hour Toughest Mudder, and the 24-hour World's Toughest Mudder races.

De Sena added, “We believe all of our current customers (including 5k and 10k participants) can successfully complete the longer format and we have seen athletes of all ability levels do it before.  We’re excited to bring this product to participants and know it will be an even more rewarding experience for them."
