Inaugural USA Triathlon Remote National Championships Announced

Nov 10, 2021

USA Triathlon, in partnership with RemoteRacing, is hosting the first-ever Remote National Championships this November. This is positioned as an opportunity for athletes from across the United States to compete for an Olympic and sprint-distance national championship regardless of where they live and train.

Using RaceX advanced simulation technology, RemoteRacing results will be ‘localized’ to the course of the 2021 Toyota USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships in Milwaukee.

Back in February 2021, USA Triathlon (USAT) partnered with RaceX, a performance science division of Predictive Fitness, as its Official Predictive Analytics Technology Partner through January 2024. This tie-up underpins the new USAT Remote National Championships initiative, with RemoteRacing an offering provided by Predictive Fitness.

Finish times for all athletes will be as if everyone was competing on the same course, in the same climate, on the same day. Also provided will be ‘equalized’ results accounting for both gender and age to aim to create a fair and level playing field.

“The energy and excitement of the multisport community at the Toyota USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships in Milwaukee this past August was unmatched and the Remote National Championships is a great opportunity to bring that spirit to people across the country,” said Victoria Brumfield, USA Triathlon Chief Business Development Officer and Chief of Staff.

“RemoteRacing appeals to athletes of all types, from competitive to casual, by adding fun, variety and purpose to their training and enabling them to see how they stack up in advance of the 2022 event in Milwaukee.”

RemoteRacing uses patents-pending EnviroNorm technology and the Equalizer to normalize participant results based on their remote environment and terrain. The platform aims to localize racing environments to simulate onsite race outcomes, and create a level playing field for all participants. It adjusts individual performances to account for the physiological differences due to age and gender.

“We’re tremendously excited to partner with USA Triathlon to launch the first-ever RemoteRacing event, centred around our sport’s iconic National Championship,” said Jeff Booher, CEO of Predictive Fitness.

“Triathletes can now race from their own locations, with results that are meaningful, to enhance their onsite racing schedules.”

While virtual racing offered an outlet for the multisport community to stay engaged during the early stages of the pandemic, USAT notes that RemoteRacing’s use of advanced technology and a well-thought-out set of rules adds a new and unique dynamic.

‘Differences in courses and environment are all accounted for, as well as numerous methods for detecting abnormalities to prevent cheating.’

Registration is now open, and the event’s race window is from November 11th-21st. Athletes must complete all three legs within the race window and activities must be done in swim-bike-run order.

Registration is US$45 for athletes who register by October 21, and US$50 starting on October 22, and will include an exclusive finisher’s medal.

Additionally, all registrants will be eligible to receive prizes from Wahoo Fitness. A portion of the proceeds will support the USA Triathlon Foundation’s mission to transform lives through sport by opening pathways for all to swim, bike, and run.

Certified coaches and members of certified clubs will receive a US$10 discount on registration. Discount codes will be sent via email to eligible coaches and club leaders, who are asked to share with their respective club members.
