Placer Valley to Host High-Flying Competition

USA Ultimate Southwest Regional College Championships will be held May 2-3 at Maidu Park in Roseville.  This two-day event will feature both Men and Women's Division I teams that qualified through the Conference Championships.  Placer Valley Tourism is excited to have partnered with USA Ultimate to bring this impressive event to Placer Valley.

The College Division for USA Ultimate was formed in 1984 and now boasts 14,000 student-athletes across more than 700 college teams. At the upcoming Southwest Regional Championships 28 teams are slated to compete with 500 plus athletes in attendance.  This will serve as the qualifing meet for the USA Ultimate National Championships that will take place Memorial Day weekend in Milwaukee.

Southwest Division I Men's College Conference Coordinator, Kerry Karter, explained that only one men's team and two women's teams will advance to the National Championships. For the Men's Division Arizona State, UC Santa Barbara and Chico State are top contenders for that coveted spot.  Whereas Stanford and UCLA are favored to secure the two open spots for the Women's Division.

Ultimate is considered to be one of the fastest growing sports in the nation and Karter attributes this to overall physicality of the sport. By incorporating elements of several sports, a game of Ultimate is played between two teams using a flying disk where the object of the game is to score by catching a pass in the opponents end zone. "The beauty of Ultimate is it combines skills from soccer, basketball and football; everyone is a quarterback and a receiver," elaborated Karter. Another unique aspect of Ultimate is that there are no referees, instead it is self-regulated and governed by the players who implement a fairplay system that works because of the level of respect amongst players.

Whether you're a long time fan or newly interested, don't miss this exciting opportunity to attend this upcoming tournament.  It is free for spectators and will be non-stop action!
