First sports tournament held at new Raleigh Convention Center
15 Mar, 2009
More than 50 elite-level Junior Olympic girls volleyball teams from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina competed at the new Raleigh Convention Center on March 14 and 15. The Mid-Atlantic Power League Tournament, hosted by the Triangle Volleyball Club, was played on 12 regulation courts assembled in the exhibit hall. This marks the first-ever sports tournament held at the 500,000 sq. ft. convention center, which opened in September 2008. Nearly 1,500 student-athletes, coaches, parents, spectators, and college recruiters were in attendance, and the event generated more than 1,000 hotel room nights and nearly $300,000 in economic impact.
