Texas, Oregon to host men’s and women’s contests for 2 years each

The NCAA has announced the host sites for the Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships for the years 2019-22. The University of Texas at Austin will serve as the host site for the 2019 and 2020 championships, while the event returns to the University of Oregon for 2021 and 2022.

The NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Track and Field and Cross Country Committee voted on the four-year site arc in a call Tuesday. The awarding of the championships through the 2022 season puts Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships on the same bid schedule as a majority of the 90 NCAA championships.

"Texas has always been an exceptional host for the NCAA outdoor track championships,” said committee chair Angie Lansing, senior associate athletics director at Indiana State. “We are looking forward to taking the championships there for two years before returning to a renovated, state-of-the-art Hayward Field in Oregon.”

Texas has hosted the men’s outdoor track and field championships six times since 1957 and the women’s championships three times since it debuted in 1982. The Longhorns and the venue, Mike A. Myers Stadium, last welcomed the Division I outdoor championships to campus in 2004 and had tremendous turnout, including 14,000 fans on the final day of competition, the largest single-day turnout over the past 22 years.

The annual host of the Texas Relays, one of the nation’s premier collegiate outdoor track events, Mike A. Myers Stadium, seats more than 20,000 spectators. The nine-lane track is noted for its wide turns and speed.

Oregon is no stranger to hosting the Division I outdoor championships, hosting six of the past eight events and 15 men’s and 11 women’s competitions in the history of the championships. The Ducks on Tuesday announced plans for a renovated Hayward Field ahead of its hosting the 2021 International Association of Athletics Federations World Championships, and the NCAA meet will be one of the first major competitions in the venue upon its reopening.  Oregon also will host this year’s Division I outdoor championships June 6-9 at Hayward Field.

The 2021 men’s competition at Hayward Field will be the 100th NCAA Division I Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

The dates for the Texas-hosted championships are June 5-8, 2019, and June 10-13, 2020.  Oregon then welcomes the championships June 9-12, 2021, and June 8-11, 2022.
