Top track and field stars from across the state will sprint to Alabama's white-sand beaches for a weekend of intense competition at the 2010 AHSAA State Track Championship for classes 4A, 5A and 6A. The Gulf Shores Sportsplex is set to host over 1,500 student-athletes on April 10 and May 1.

Heats for 17 events - such as shot put, discus, javelin, long jump, triple jump, pole vault, hurdles, dash and relay – begin on Friday at 9:30 a.m. and continue throughout the day until the last event starts at 4 p.m. Resuming play on Saturday at 8:30 a.m., the athletes will battle it out until the awards ceremony starts at 4:30 p.m.

Local teams will learn their fate when heat sheets are posted on Wednesday at www.alabamarunners.com.

"We are proud to host this event, and the athletes and coaches have worked very hard to advance to the state meet," said Mark Freeman, athletic director at Gulf Shores High School.

The Alabama Gulf Coast Sports Commission (AGCSC) partnered with the city of Gulf Shores to host this event.

"We are thrilled to welcome these talented student-athletes and their friends and family to our beach destination and our top-notch sports facilities," said Beth Gendler, director of sales at the AGCSC. "We always welcome the opportunity to introduce our family-friendly destination, which showcases 32 miles of sugar white sand and turquoise water, to more potential life-long guests."

AGCSC Sponsors represented include The Hangout, Microtel Inn and Suites, Original Oyster House and Spectrum Resorts.
