World Triathlon reschedules World Cup events to September 2020
30 Jul, 2020
The Executive Board of World Triathlon shared updates regarding events, the situation of member national federations and the upcoming World Triathlon Congress. The international governing body also followed up on ongoing discussions over the future of the organization, including rebranding options and races resuming in the autumn/fall.
The World Triathlon Board approved new dates for two World Cup events that were previously postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak, with Karlovy vary World Cup now taking place on September 12-13, 2020 and Chengdu World Cup the following week, on September 19-20, 2020.
The events will now be included in the World Triathlon calendar, as well as the WTS Hamburg and Mixed Relay World Championships, which were recently announced to take place on September 4-5, 2020. These events will not be included in the Olympic qualification rankings and will not count for Olympic qualification rankings or the World Triathlon rankings.
“We are conscious that the situation is different in almost every country, and we are working together with organisers, continental confederations, national federations, athletes and coaches to try to resume activities and events as soon as it is feasible, so it is great to start seeing some events being added to the calendar after the summer,” said World Triathlon President and IOC member, Marisol Casado.
“We will continue working to ensure that we can provide our athletes and our members opportunities to race, always considering when is safe and fair to do so.”
The Executive Board has continued to work on different proposals, schedules and options for the rebranding of the organization, and discussed the possibilities for the upcoming congress and elections, planned for November 2020, including the possibility of allowing a hybrid/virtual session if members not are able to travel.
