US Lacrosse has named Colorado Springs, Colo., as host city for the 2012 and 2013 Women’s Lacrosse Collegiate Lacrosse Associates (WCLA) National Championships. The El Pomar Youth Sports Park will host the events May 9-12, 2012, and May 8-11, 2013.

The WCLA, a collegiate, club-level league, consists of nearly 200 women’s teams from across the country. The teams compete in nine leagues that host roughly 4,500 players in two divisions. The Division I and Division II National Championships host 16 and eight teams, respectively.

Colorado Springs Convention & Visitors Bureau Sports and Special Events Manager Cheryl McCullough said, “We’re ecstatic that Colorado Springs has the opportunity to host the WCLA event for both 2012 and 2013. The destination feels fortunate to be part of a significant collegiate lacrosse event. Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States, and we look forward to bringing more lacrosse events to the city.”

“We are excited to have been selected as the host venue site for the WCLA National Championships in 2012 and 2013,” said Lauren C. Weiner, executive director for Colorado Springs Youth Sports Park. “Colorado Springs Youth Sports, Inc., seeks to provide top rate facilities and sports opportunities for young people. This championship event will showcase exceptionally talented athletes, and we are honored to welcome US Lacrosse to the El Pomar Youth Sports Park and the City of Colorado Springs.”

The 2011 US Lacrosse WCLA National Championships, sponsored by Harrow Sports, are in Scottsdale, Ariz., May 4-7 at the Scottsdale Sports Complex. The University of Colorado is the No. 1 seed in the Division I field and Westminster College (Utah) is the No. 1 seed in the Division II field.

“We have enjoyed the hospitality that Scottsdale has shown the past three years as host for this tournament,” said Beth Porreca, director of special events at US Lacrosse. “The Colorado Springs Convention & Visitors Bureau, as well as Colorado Springs Youth Sports, Inc., have displayed a great enthusiasm to host the 2012 and 2013 WCLA National Championships. We are excited to bring this event to their community.”

The US Lacrosse WCLA National Championships began in 2001 and have previously been hosted in St. Louis, Minneapolis, Dallas, Denver and Scottsdale.
