Cities, Gyms, Clubs, Coaches and More Expected to Participate

USA Gymnastics celebrates the sport with National Gymnastics Day to promote fitness though active lifestyles and to raise money for Children's Miracle Network hospitals. National Gymnastics Day is Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013.

Cities with clubs, coaches, gymnastics academies and more can get in on the action.

Social Media Celebration
USA Gymnastics uses a variety of social media networks to connect nation-wide involvement and this year, the length of the celebration will be extended to 1 week, instead of a single day. This will allow ALL gymnastics athletes and fans to "Turn the World Upside Down" and share photos in creative ways on Facebook. Register for a Facebook account at Facebook.com and 'Like' the USA Gymnastics page to stay connected to news. Follow @USAGym on Twitter and use the hashtag #NGD2013.

Host an Event
USA Gymnastics encourages all cities, clubs, coaches and fans to host an event for National Gymnastics Day! Hold an open gym and festival at your club, join community events with a promotional booth, or create a USA Gymnastics Fitness Zone for athletes of all ages and skill levels. This is a great way to take advantage of an opportunity to promote your club.

Personalize a flyer to promote your event using materials found on the USA Gymnastics page for the event:  http://usagym.org/pages/home/ngd/home.html. Alternatively, a poster can be downloaded and printed from the same page.

Events may be held on September 21 or within the week following to allow all gymnasts to participate and post a picture on Facebook.

USA Gymnastics Fitness Zone
USA Gymnastics is proud to introduce the Fitness Zone practicing the basics of cardio, strength, flexibility and balance, while learning about the benefits of exercise and healthy choices. This allows those who may not be elite gymnasts to experience the many ways gymnastics develops a strong body. We encourage all clubs to consider hosting a fitness zone as part of a National Gymnastics Day event. Find more details at usagym.org/fitness.

Raise the Bar for Children's Miracle Network
USA Gymnastics challenges all participants to surpass the number of participants and funds raised in past years. In 2012, the fundraising total for CMN was $121,899.70 and more than 43,000 people joined together to turn upside down. This number more than doubled the participants in the 2011 handstand world record effort. Since 2001, gymnastics clubs across the country have raised more than $1.8 million for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.

The clubs that raise the most money for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals will receive the following prizes:

1st place
AAI gift certificate for $1,500
Member Services gift certificate for $200

2nd place
AAI gift certificate for $1,000
Member Services gift certificate for $200

3rd place
AAI gift certificate for $750
Member Services gift certificate for $200

The top three individuals who raised the most money for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals will receive:
Round-trip airfare for two to the 2014 AT&T American Cup
Two tickets to the 2014 AT&T American Cup
Two pre-event VIP hospitality passes
One night stay in the USA Gymnastics host hotel

In addition to the prizes listed above, the individual who raises the most money for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals will be featured in USA Gymnastics promotional materials in 2014 for National Gymnastics Day and the USA Gymnastics Fitness Program.

About USA Gymnastics: USA Gymnastics is the sole national governing body for the sport of gymnastics in the United States. This designation comes from the U.S. Olympic Committee, and the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG). USA Gymnastics sets the rules and policies that govern gymnastics in the United States. USA Gymnastics has many responsibilities, including selecting and training the U.S. Gymnastics Teams for Olympic Games and World Championships; promoting and developing gymnastics on a grassroots and national level; and serving as a resource center for member clubs, fans and gymnasts throughout the United States.  The organization has programs in men’s and women’s artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline and tumbling and acrobatic gymnastics.

The 501(c)(3), not-for-profit organization was established in Tucson, Ariz., in 1963. The first Board of Directors began the time-consuming task of creating a viable national program for gymnastics in the United States.  During the mid-1960s the United States had scarcely 7,000 athletes competing a limited schedule. The only major international events for gymnasts were the Olympic Games and the Pan American Games. Due to the hard work of U.S. gymnastics pioneers, such as Frank Bare, George Gulack, Dean McCoy, Gene Wettstone and Arthur Gander, the U.S. Gymnastics Federation, now doing business as USA Gymnastics, gained membership into the FIG in 1970, opening the door to numerous opportunities for U.S. gymnasts. In the last 30-plus years, the sport has grown by leaps and bounds. Most recently, USA Gymnastics welcomed acrobatic gymnastics as its newest discipline in 2002.

Today, more than 110,000 athletes and professionals are members of USA Gymnastics. USA Gymnastics has more than 90,000 athletes registered in competitive programs, as well as more than 20,000 professional, instructor and club members. Throughout the year, USA Gymnastics provides educational opportunities for coaches and judges, as well as gym club owners and administrators, through regional Congresses, the National Congress and Trade Show and USA Gymnastics University.  Approximately 3,500 competitions and events throughout the USA are sanctioned annually. USA Gymnastics is headquartered in Indianapolis, Ind., and has expanded very quickly in its 30-plus years. The original staff of three has now grown to more than 40 employees, handling member services, competition programs, marketing, communications, events, finance and administration.

USA Gymnastics logo and organizational slogan – “Begin Here.  Go Anywhere.” – were adopted in June 2003.
