The 2009 State Games Of America will be held July 30-August 2 in Colorado Springs, with athletes of all ages and skill levels competing for medals in 31 sports at 22 venues across the city, including the Air Force Academy, World Arena, U.S. Olympic Training Center, Colorado College and Fort Carson. The Opening Ceremony is set for July 30 at the World Arena.

A record 10,800 athletes from 47 states attended the 2007 Games in Colorado Springs. More than 10,000 are expected this summer, including as many as 8,000 athletes from more than 115 cities and towns in Colorado.

The State Games of America is the premier national multi-sport event for athletes of all ages and abilities held every biennium under the banner of the National Congress of State Games. Medal winners from 49 State Games nationwide earn the right to compete against other winners and match their skills and competitive desire in a national arena.

The 2009 edition marks the third time that Colorado Springs has hosted this national event, having previously hosted it 2005 and 2007, both with record numbers. Other host cities have included Hartford, Connecticut and St. Louis, Missouri.

The State Games concept was developed in New York in 1978 with the Empire State Games. Annually, more than 400,000 athletes compete in State Games nationwide. State Games feature various sports from the Olympic and Pan American Games programs as well as sports with regional popularity in each state.

Organized and managed by the Colorado Springs Sports Corporation, the 2009 State Games of America will be combined with Colorado’s Rocky Mountain State Games again this summer.

Prominent State Games athletes include: Jeff Blatnick, Ralph Boston, Mike Mussina, Tracy Caulkins, Calbert Cheaney, Curt Clausen, Diane Dixon, Tom Dolan, Suzy Favor-Hamilton, Dan Gable, Rowdy Gaines, Harvey Glance, Nicole Hislett, Nancy Hogshead, Roy Jones, Adonis Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Nancy Kerrigan, Mike Richter, Rusty LaRue, Danny Manning, Henry Marsh, Eric Montross, Rick Hamilton, Chris Mullin, Tab Ramos, Glenn Robinson, Alberto Salazaar, Doug Smith, Rex Walters, Lones Wigger, Jr. and Paul Wylie.
