According to the Abilene Convention & Visitors Bureau, the 4-H Shooting Sports State Games runs through Saturday, July 27 at the Callahan County Shooting Complex on FM 18. David Ratliff the local planner said “The Callahan County 4-H organization has worked hard to get the facility in good shape and is proud the State 4-H officials chose to move this event to Callahan County from San Antonio.”
The 4-H Shooting Sports is a comprehensive introduction to shooting sports safety and the fundamentals of archery, pistol, rifle, shotgun, muzzle loading, and hunting. Youth may participate in one or more of the listed disciplines. The project concentrates on a strong youth development approach based upon long-term mentorship. Also offered through 4-H are district and state-wide family involvement activities and programs for youth of all ages.
The shooters will compete on air, pistol, rifle and black powder ranges beginning at 8am with the last start time at 4pm. Previous days awards will be every morning at 7:30am. The State games will conclude with the final awards ceremony Saturday at 1pm.
For Texas 4-H Clover Kids (ages 5-8) attending the Texas 4-H Shooting Sports State Games with the family fun filled mornings are planned with games, crafts, hands-on educational activities on natural resources and outdoor education on camping, outdoor cooking and wildlife including birds, bats, pollinators, and more. Those registered will start at 9-noon now through July 26.
Larry Hysmith, the 4-H Natural Resources Program Leader has 160 shooters ages 8-19 traveling to compete. “This is the first in many years the competition has been held outside of San Antonio. The local 4-H organization has done a great job in preparing the facility for this state event and we are pleased to be so welcomed by them and the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau.”
The Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau estimate an economic impact of $330,000 for this five day event.
