NCAA Joins PGA and USGA In Bringing High Profile Events to Grand Strand

TPC Myrtle Beach, a Tom Fazio and Lanny Wadkins-designed facility, has been ranked among America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses
The NCAA has announced that TPC Myrtle Beach, a Tom Fazio and Lanny Wadkins design that has been ranked among America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses, will host a Division I Men’s Regional Golf Tournament May 12-15, 2019. TPC Myrtle Beach, which can play well over 7,000 yards, has long been one of the Grand Strand’s premier big event venues.

The course hosted the Senior Tour Championship in 1999 and one of the game’s all-time greats, Tom Watson, emerged victorious.

Dustin Johnson, the world’s best player, called TPC home for years and hosts his namesake junior event at the course every February. TPC has also hosted numerous college tournaments and the Flight Winner’s Playoff of the Myrtle Beach World Amateur Handicap Championship.

The course plays through environmentally protected wetlands that create beauty and challenge.

The layout is strong throughout but reaches a crescendo on the final two holes. The 17th is a par 3 with a peninsula green that is reminiscent of the same hole at TPC Sawgrass, but the par 5 18th is the course’s signature challenge.

The final fairway is dissected by a stream and a lake runs up the left side of the hole for the final 200 yards, creating risk-reward decisions and demanding precision. It’s a great finish at one of Myrtle Beach’s best courses.

For Myrtle Beach, the tournament will be another in a succession of competitive events the area has hosted. In 2014, Myrtle Beach hosted the PGA Professional National Championship, and this May the Dunes Club will welcome the USGA Women’s Four-Ball Championship.

Myrtle Beach has also hosted the Hootie & the Blowfish Monday After the Masters Celebrity Pro-Am for the last 14 years.
