Florence Athletics & Sports Tourism: Full Life. Full Forward.

The City of Florence, South Carolina is fast becoming a growing destination for sports tourism due to location, construction of new athletics facilities and the infrastructure to provide a quality experience.

Florence is conveniently located in the Pee Dee Region of South Carolina at the intersection of I-95 and I-20 and is within driving distance of several large metropolitan areas in the Southeast. It is an ideal location for teams from across the Southeast region. The Florence community has great local infrastructure to host athletic events which includes a large selection of restaurants from national chains such as Longhorn, Outback and Olive Garden; and locally owned establishments that give you a great taste of the local flair.

Need a place for your team members to rest their heads at night? The city also has a strong network of hotels with 5,500 total rooms including properties at major brands such as Marriott, Hilton and Choice Hotels. You won’t lack for options!

When it comes to athletic venues, there are currently four athletic venues operated by the City of Florence Athletics/Sports Tourism Department. Another facility, Florence Center is managed by ASM Global. Under construction and due to come online in summer of 2022 is the Florence Sports Complex.

Here’s a look at each facility.

Freedom Florence Sports Complex was built in 1992 and renovated in April 2021. The complex has nine softball/baseball fields with dirt infields. It is divided into two areas with five fields on the upper complex and four fields on the lower complex. Both the lower and upper complexes at Freedom Florence have center complex buildings that contain full-service concession stands, bathrooms and press box areas. Freedom Florence has a batting cage facility with eight automated lanes that range from slow pitch softball to 90mph baseball. Freedom also has three lighted multi-purpose fields with a bathroom/concession area. Additionally, this complex boasts a walking/jogging trail with a certified 5K trail.

Dr. Eddie Floyd Tennis Center opened in July of 2011. The tennis center features 24 asphalt courts and six Har-Tru courts. The tennis center also includes an activity center with a lounge area, restrooms, locker rooms with showers, meeting and office space and a pro shop. The Dr. Eddie Floyd Tennis Center is no stranger to hosting tournaments; it events include McLeod for Health Florence Open (a pro circuit event), several USTA State Championships, the Peach Belt Conference Championship and the South Carolina High School Championships.

Pearl Moore Basketball Center opened in April of 2018 and is approximately 31,525 square feet. There are three high school-size basketball courts, concession area, referee locker room and four team lockers. The center has hosted travel basketball events, gymnastics events and dance/cheer events.

Florence Soccer Complex opened in the Spring of 2018. It offers 10 full size Tiff Bermuda Grass soccer fields and will be looking to expand to 14 fields over the next year. There are two championship fields with bleacher seating, scoreboards and Musco lighting systems. The complex also has 6,000 square feet of space in its activities building, including bathrooms, concession stand, medical treatment room, offices and a large meeting space.

There is plenty of parking to host large events as well satellite bathroom buildings on the north and south end of the complex. The complex has hosted the Conference Carolina Soccer Championships, Flag Football events, Ultimate events and youth soccer events.

Florence Center is managed by ASM Global and has a 10,000-seat arena, 14,500 square foot main ballroom, a second smaller ballroom, and nine meeting rooms, as well as oversized pre-function area.

Florence Sports Complex will be completed during the summer of 2022. The facility will be comprised of five youth baseball fields that will have 225-foot fences, a high school baseball field, 1,500 seat collegiate baseball stadium and a collegiate level track. The baseball stadium will be home field for the Carolina League Florence Flamingos, and will be open to host college games, recruiting events and concerts. The track has eight lanes and will offer all track events.
