The Hershey Harrisburg Sports & Events Authority (HHSE) announced that a new long-distance Fondo-style cycling event is coming to Harrisburg. Harrisburg is one of six cities to host Fondo Cycling Circuit USA (FCCUSA) in 2018.  Riders will gather at the starting line in Harrisburg’s Midtown neighborhood on Sunday, August 26 and choose from 30, 50 and 75-mile ride options that begin in Harrisburg and reach as far north as Fort Indiantown Gap before doubling back to Midtown.

FCCUSA Harrisburg will culminate with entertainment for riders and the entire community to enjoy. Final details for what is intended to be a festival-like post-ride atmosphere will be announced as they are finalized.

Other stops on the new ASD-produced Fondo Cycling Circuit USA include Davidson, NC (August 5), Clermont, FL (September 30), Akron, OH (October 14), Fredericksburg, VA (October 21) and Ridgeland, MS (October 28).

2018 marks the first year of a three-year agreement (2018, ’19, ’20) between ASD and HHSE to host the event in Harrisburg. Producers expect hundreds of participants at the inaugural Harrisburg ride.

ASD says the overall feel of the races will be recreational in nature, but will also have several timed features throughout the course to add an element of competition for riders looking for a challenge.

“This cycling tour is a perfect example of why we were driven to create a dedicated sports & events authority,” said HHSE Executive Director Gregg Cook. “With the addition of a Business Development Manager (Dean Polk filled the position when HHSE launched in 2016), we were perfectly positioned to track down the event lead, offer route suggestions and bring all the stakeholders (police departments, business owners, etc.) together to make this happen – and still have other staff working on additional projects. Prior to establishing HHSE, the pursuit of an event with so many moving parts might have meant pressing pause on the search for the next big event,” said Cook. “Now, we’re rolling.”
