Lake Erie Speedway has been added to the 2021 Formula DRIFT Championship Schedule. Its leading PRO Series, featuring 1000-hp competition cars, will make a stop in Erie County on July 9-10, debuting its ‘Borderlands’ event for local fans.

Formula DRIFT is an extremely exciting sport for competitors and spectators alike. The North American series is recognized as the leading international drifting championship, attracting drivers from around the world. Established on the streets of Japan, drifting has evolved into a worldwide competitive sport that challenges the driver’s skill while demanding a great deal from their vehicle in terms of power and strength. Drifting is a driving technique where the driver intentionally oversteers, creating a loss of traction and plumes of tire smoke, while maintaining control through a number of turns. Each run in a Formula DRIFT event is judged on three criteria: Line, Angle and Style.

Up to 32 drivers will compete in pairs and go through multiple rounds. After the first round, the top 16 drivers with the highest score progress through the single-elimination tournament until a winner is crowned after the final round.

“We are beyond excited to welcome globally-recognized Formula DRIFT and its talented professional athletes to the Erie region,” said AJ Moore, general manager of Lake Erie Speedway. “Watching tandem drifting is one of the most exciting things I have ever witnessed. You will not want to miss this event!”

“After a challenging 2020 season, we’re really looking forward to getting back in front of our fans this year, and thrilled to bringing Formula DRIFT to fans in the Erie region,” said Jim Liaw, President of Formula DRIFT. “It’s been a pleasure to work with the team at Lake Erie Speedway and we’re confident the track and its facilities will become a regular feature of future Formula DRIFT seasons.”

Formula DRIFT will make eight stops on its 2021 tour. Lake Erie Speedway is one of two new tracks on the schedule along with Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in New Jersey. Additional events will take place in Atlanta, Orlando and St Louis as well as Street of Long Beach and Irwindale Speedway in California.

Single day and two-day tickets are on sale now. Admission is open to all ages, and free for children under 5. Current COVID-19 protocols will be enforced at the event, and face coverings will be required.
