New Owners of Slippery Rock Golf Course Make Their Debut

Slippery Rock Golf Club & Events Center, formerly the Oakview Golf Club, is under new ownership. Eric and Julie Prebula, two of the four new owners, purchased the 182-acre golf course and tri-level clubhouse in December of 2019.

The property had been for sale off and on for the last few years by the previous ownership, ACC Holdings, who purchased the property from Armco Steel. Prior to that, Armco operated the facility for 49 years as a private recreational facility and golf course for their employees.

The vision of the golf course formed in the early 1920s when Ralph Nicholas drove his mortgage lender to what was then farmland surrounding the Slippery Rock Creek and Ralph shared with him his idea of constructing a golf course on the property.  In 1928, Ralph Nicholas’s vision became a reality when the first 9 holes were designed and constructed by F.T. Stafford. In 1945, the property was sold to Wynn Tredway, the architect who repaired the original 9 holes and went on to design and build out the back 9 holes, to the completed course that welcomes players today. Ten years later, in 1955, Mr. Tredway sold the course to Armco Steele and went on to design many more golf courses.

“Our family has a long history of serving this community starting with my great-cousin, Ralph Nicholas, who along with my late grandparents, Senator Donald O. and Ann M. Oesterling and my uncle, club member, Peter J. Oesterling, were instrumental in many improvements for the community,” stated Eric Prebula.

A recent mixer with over 150 past and present members featured a representative from Club Car, the golf cart manufacturer who showcased the new fleet of golf carts that are equipped with GPS tracking and touch screen options and a demonstration from Tempo Walk™, a handsfree, autonomous caddie that offers GPS yardage, carries bags, coolers and other accessories. Both items were well received by the membership, and will be making their debut on the course this season. There will be a total of 50 new Club Car carts complete with all the bells and whistles.

Another announcement was the alliance with ClubCorp, the largest owner and operator of private clubs nationwide with 200+ country clubs, city clubs, athletic clubs and stadium clubs. By offering the new Slippery Rock Golf Club Signature Gold membership package, members will now have access to this extensive network that includes Treesdale, Diamond Run, The Rivers Club and the prestigious Firestone Golf Club, to name a few.

"I couldn't be any more excited about the future of Slippery Rock Golf Club & Events Center, and I believe big things will come out of it."- Daniel Erb, President of Slippery Rock University Golf Club.
