Eight years ago, the Gala Gymnastics Meet began at UNC Asheville with 85 gymnasts. In the third year, the event moved downtown to the US Cellular Center and the event size increased significantly.

Two years ago, a winter snow storm blanketed Asheville but over 1,000 participants still came and participated in the tournament. This weekend, over 1,425 gymnasts will compete in the event which is now held annually on the first weekend of January in Asheville.

Gymnasts from all across the Southeastern United States converge in Asheville creating a total investment in the local economy of $2,038,877,877.

“The holiday tourist season has just ended, and this event is a big boast to our local economy on the first weekend in January,” said Demp Bradford, Executive Director of the Asheville Buncombe Regional Sports Commission. “This has been a great event for our hotels, restaurants businesses. The families love the ability to stay in the downtown hotels and walk to the US Cellular Center to compete. This event is a popular event with our volunteers and is great for the US Cellular Center.”

Gala Gymnastics kicks off a very busy 10 weeks of sports events for the Asheville Buncombe Sports Commission, the US Cellular Center, and volunteers as Asheville prepares to host the 2019 Fed Cup and the Southern Conference Basketball Championships.

Saturday’s competition will run from 8 am until 8:30 pm and Sunday’s schedule is from 8 am until 6:00 pm.
