New York Road Runners (NYRR), the world’s premier community running organization, has announced its Popular® Brooklyn Half. The largest half marathon in the United States will include 27,000 runners who are expected to make the iconic 13.1-mile journey on Saturday, May 18.

The 39th running of the Popular® Brooklyn Half will be the second of five events in the 2019 NYRR Five-Borough Series. The course will take runners through the heart of Brooklyn, beginning near the historic Brooklyn Museum and going around Grand Army Plaza, over the rolling hills of Prospect Park, and down to the finish line on the world-famous Coney Island boardwalk.

In 2018, the event sold out in 2 hours, 17 minutes, making it one of the fastest-selling races in the country. Registration for this year’s event opened on January 31 and is already sold out.

“The Popular® Brooklyn Half is one of the most sought after race entries in the country,” said Michael Capiraso, president and CEO of NYRR. “New York Road Runners has a long history in Brooklyn for runners of all ages and abilities, with the half marathon now spanning nearly four decades and our free youth running programs, which began in Red Hook, marking its 20th anniversary this year.”

Popular Bank will be the title sponsor of the Brooklyn Half for the second consecutive year, serving as the exclusive official bank of the event and strategic partner of the NYRR Five-Borough Series.

Race week will kick off with the three-day celebration at the Popular® Brooklyn Half Pre-Party presented by New Balance in a new location this year at 11 Water Street (corner of New Dock and Water Street) in Brooklyn. Runners, friends, family, and the entire surrounding community will be able to enjoy a free, unique experience filled with celebrations of fitness, hospitality, local food, and music from May 15 to 17.

Runners who received guaranteed entry to this year’s Popular® Brooklyn Half already claimed their race entries earlier this month, including participants in NYRR’s Virtual 6 program who completed six NYRR virtual races in 2018. If runners do not receive entry through the general public registration or by claiming their guaranteed entry, they can still obtain entry to the Popular® Brooklyn Half by running for NYRR Team for Kids. Team for Kids is NYRR’s largest charity and raises funds for NYRR’s free youth running programs for kids who would otherwise have little or no access to regular physical activity.

Last year, 25,346 runners crossed the finish line at the Popular® Brooklyn Half to make it the largest half marathon in the country in 2018.
