The Meijer State Games of Michigan’s winter event is returning for a second year in the Grand Rapids area.

Officials announced that registration has opened for the Winter Games, which are being held from Feb. 20-22. The event will offer 20 sports with several new additions, including shooting sports and weightlifting.

The opening ceremony takes place at Cannonsburg Ski Area, northeast of Grand Rapids, and is expected to include fireworks, lighting of the cauldron and an exhibition with professional skiers and snowboarders.

The inaugural winter games were held in 2014.

Modeled after the Olympics, the Meijer State Games aims to draw athletes regardless of age or ability. In 2013, the Summer Games offered 34 sports and attracted more than 6,500 athletes.
