Fatbike GRR Race Series Begins this Weekend at Meijer State Games of Michigan – Winter Games

The Fatbike GRR Race Series will be kicking off this Sunday, December 15 at 1:00pm at the Grand Rapids Bike Park (580 Kirtland, Grand Rapids, MI). The Meijer State Games of Michigan are proud to partner with the Fatbike GRR Race Series to produce the 2013/2014 race series. The series finale is scheduled to take place during the inaugural Meijer State Games of Michigan - Winter Games at Boulder Creek Golf Club.

Eric Engelbarts, Executive Director of the Meijer State Games of Michigan stated, “It’s a natural fit for Michigan to have Winter Games and partnering with the Fatbike GRR Race Series will only enhance the event. The sport of Fatbike fits our mission of providing Michigan residents of all ages and abilities the opportunity to stay active in the winter months.”

Fatbike racing is an up and coming cycling trend which takes mountain biking to the next level. The wide rims, extra-large tires, and oddly dimensioned frames allow the bikes to race on any terrain. Fatbike tires measure at least 3.7 inches wide, doubling most regular bike tires, allowing these bikes to “float” on top of dirt, mud, and snow.

The 2012/2013 elite division Fatbike GRR Race Series winner, Nate Versluis stated, “The Fatbike GRR Race Series is a great and fun series. I look forward to participating this year.”

Versluis continued “Fatbike is not just a fad. Riding Fatbike is where it's at in the winter time.”

This weekend’s race will kick-off the six race Fatbike series. Any biker is welcome to participate in as many races in the tour as they would like, whether they wish to compete in all six races, or just one. The series total is the best of four out of the six races with the lowest score being dropped. Three divisions will be offered for bikers to compete in: elite, fun and duo. The schedule is as follows:

2013/2014 Fatbike GRR Race Series Schedule

• Dec. 29 Indian Trails Golf Course    • Feb. 2    Richmond Park
