Two large archery competitions, the National Field Archery Association Indoor Nationals and the National Archery in the Schools Program Kentucky State Tournament, are bringing more than 5,500 archers to downtown Louisville.
The NFAA Indoor Nationals runs Friday, March 14 – Sunday, March 16. Modern-day Robin Hoods, ranging in age from 7-70, will participate in more than 40 divisions from professional to amateurs. The organization is celebrating its 75th anniversary and 35th annual Indoor Nationals event this year.
On Friday afternoon, youth archers (ages 17 and under) will shoot with NFAA professional archers during the Practice with the Pros session. Many well-known archers, including Paralympians, World Team members and past World Cup team members will compete at the event.
Before the tournament officially begins, a single-round Pro-Am event will be held Friday for archers, ages 12 and up, offering a cash prize add-on to the NFAA Indoor Nationals. The Indoor Nationals tournament starts at 7 a.m. on Saturday. Sunday’s shooting schedule will be determined by Saturday’s results.
The Indoor Nationals is the second leg of the annual 3 Star Tour, which offers more than $250,000 in prize money as well as a chance to win a million dollar prize for consecutive perfect scores at each event.
Visitors can browse bows, arrows, scopes, archery accessories, apparel and more on Saturday from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. at the archery trade show that accompanies the event.
The National Archery in the Schools Program Kentucky State Tournament will be held Monday, March 17 – Tuesday, March 18 in Exhibit Hall 2CD. The 2014 event is the state’s largest tournament to date, with more than 4,260 student archers, ranging from 4th to 12th grade, expected to compete. Competition runs Monday, 2 - 8 p.m. and Tuesday, 8 a.m. -7 p.m. Tickets are $5 per person (ages eight and up).
The National Archery in the School Program began in 2002 as a way to involve children in outdoor activities. Archery is a sport that most students can master with practice and helps build self-esteem, focus and teamwork. More than 90,000 students participate in the National Archery in the Schools Program in Kentucky. Since its inception, the program has spread to 47 states and several countries.
