Citi Open Coming to Washington, DC, in August 2015

The Citi Open formerly the Legg Mason Tennis Classic, returns to Washington, DC from August 1-9, 2015.

About the Citi Open: In July of 1969, the inaugural tournament became one of the first open professional tennis tournaments held in the United States. The Citi Open, first called the Legg Mason Tennis Classic, has since been part of some of the most innovative changes in tennis, including blue courts, instant replay/video boards in the stadium, US Open Series, Sunday Main Draw start and, starting in 2009, an ATP "500" level tournament. Continuing that theme, the Event introduced a WTA International Level tournament in 2012, offering $220,000 in prize money. This WTA tournament (which was called the Citi Open and held the week before the then-Legg Mason Tennis Classic at the Tennis Center of College Park, Md., in 2011) will be played simultaneously with the ATP World Tour 500 event at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Rock Creek Park and collectively named the Citi Open.

Owner and Beneficiary: A portion of the proceeds from the Citi Open benefits the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation (WTEF). The WTEF seeks to improve the life prospects for DC area youth, particularly those from lower-income communities, through tennis, educational and community-based activities that teach discipline, build self-esteem and improve academic performance.
