The Colorado Tourism Office (CTO) recently issued an award of $25,000 to the Greater Grand Junction Sports Commission (GGJSC) through its Marketing Matching Grant program. This was the maximum award allocation per applicant. The funds will be used to increase awareness and perception of the greater Grand Junction area as a destination for significant sporting events, attracting event owners, athletes and supporters to the region.

The GGJSC applied for the grant in collaboration with its partners — Mesa County, the cities of Grand Junction and Fruita, the Town of Palisade and Colorado Mesa University. The award was issued under the program’s Regional Partnership category, a fitting designation for an organization dedicated to bolstering the economy of the region and supported by an entire community.

“We are pleased to make this investment in your organization and to drive economic growth throughout Colorado,” the CTO wrote in its award letter.

The sports commission will use the grant — designed solely for marketing — to improve its website and social media presence, participate in more sports tourism industry tradeshows to attract events, produce a series of videos showcasing the greater Grand Junction area’s community venues and to create promotional materials. These marketing initiatives are designed to further the perception of the region as an ideal sports tourism destination.

The GGJSC is a collaborative effort between Colorado Mesa University, the City of Grand Junction, Mesa County, the City of Fruita and the Town of Palisade to promote sport tourism in the community. The organization’s mission is to represent the greater Grand Junction area in attracting new and enhancing existing sporting events that capitalize on our assets, positively impact our economy and community and deliver the highest level of customer service.
