USTA National Women's 50-90 Hard Court Championships Playing Out This Week

10 May, 2017

The United States Tennis Association National Women’s 50-90 Hard Court Championships runs all this week at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, 2000 Spindrift Dr, La Jolla, CA 92037.

The women’s national championships will feature singles and doubles competition in the 50 and over, 60 and over, 70 and over, 80 and over, and 90 and over age divisions. The tournament, which concludes on Sunday, May 14, attracts the top senior players from across the United States in each age group.

Two former highly-ranked touring tennis professionals are entered in the 50 and over division.  Ros Nideffer, who lives in the San Diego community of Rancho Bernardo, is a two-time Wimbledon singles quarterfinalist and a former French Open doubles champion. Nideffer won 10 WTA doubles titles and achieved a career-high Women’s Tennis Association singles ranking of No. 15 in the world in 1990. She is the top seed in the 50 and over singles draw.

The second seed is Nathalie Herreman-Bagby, a native of France, who now lives in Pacific Palisades, Calif. She holds one career WTA singles title and two doubles championships. A former member of the French Fed Cup team, Herreman-Bagby was ranked as high as No. 42 in the world in 1986.

Nideffer and Herreman-Bagby split six head-to-head meeting s on the WTA tour. They met in last year’s 50 hard court singles final in La Jolla as Nideffer won her third straight title and fourth in the last five years with a hard-fought 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Herreman-Bagby.

Tina Karwasky is the top seed in the 60 and over singles division. The 64-year-old resident of Glendale, Calif., is one of the top senior players in the world. She is attempting to win the 60s national hard court title for the sixth straight year at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.

“With two prominent former touring tennis professionals among the many player entries, it’s going to be an incredible week of high-level senior tennis,” said Tournament Director Bill Kellogg. “We invite tennis fans to come and enjoy the matches and great tournament atmosphere.”
