More than 800 competitors from 100 countries will compete at the World Taekwondo Federation World Junior Championships, being held in Burnaby in Canada.

Competition at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre will include ten weight divisions for men and eight for women, with qualifying rounds in the morning before semi-finals and finals in the evening.

According to organizers in Burnaby, which lies adjacent to Vancouver in British Colombia, the event is the second largest sports event ever held in Canada in terms of country participation, behind the 2001 World Athletics Championships in Edmonton.

Canada hosted the Summer Olympics in Montreal in 1976 and the Winter Games in Calgary in 1988 and Vancouver in 2010, but country numbers never reached 100.

The 2016 World Junior Championships will be the 11th edition of the event, which is held every two years.

Each country can send one athlete per weight division with coaches and staff support.

Action will begin tomorrow with world champions set to be crowned in the men's 45 kilogram and 48kg categories.

Women's gold medals will be decided at 42kg and 44kg.

The event runs through November 20.
