Pima County Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation and the Tucson Soccer Academy will make today, Friday, Jan. 3, the grand opening of the Ann Kathryn Schmidt Kickin’ It Clubhouse at Brandi Fenton Memorial Park, 3482 E. River Road.

An open house will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4.

The grand opening at 4 p.m. on Friday can be accessed by the east entrance to the park on North Dodge Boulevard.

The clubhouse is named for Tucson Soccer Academy President Ted Schmidt’s wife, who was a TSA team manager for eight years until she died from breast cancer on her birthday on Jan. 3, 2011.

The Pima County Board of Supervisors voted last year to lease an old building at Brandi Fenton Memorial Park to TSA at no charge for 20 years in exchange for TSA’s improvements.

TSA raised funds to renovate the building and furnish it for use by young people who play and practice soccer at the park, Ted Schmidt said. As a result, the clubhouse now includes a study area, workout room, offices, a meeting room and an area for coaches to review game film.

“It is a testament to the good people in this community who happily pitch in to help and a County government led by (former) Supervisor Ann Day as well as the Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation and Facilities Management departments that creatively find solutions to problems,” he said. “The end result here is the conversion of a rundown old building used for storage into a state-of-the-art clubhouse and fitness facility for kids.”
