Disabled Sports USA (DSUSA), which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, announced that American International Group, Inc.'s (AIG) 2017 Winter Summit raised $750,000 for its Warfighter Sports and Empower Youth Sports programs.

The AIG Winter Summit, held this week at Stowe Mountain Resort in Vermont, has been an annual event for over 26 years. It is attended by AIG business partners and professionals from across the insurance industry. Over the last eleven years, they have been joined by DSUSA’s wounded warfighters and youth with disabilities, all of whom participate in ski and snowboard races to raise funds for DSUSA's Warfighter Sports and Empower Youth Sports programs.

Kirk Bauer (U.S. Army, retired), Executive Director of DSUSA, said, "We cannot thank AIG and its Winter Summit partners enough for their generosity and partnership.  Over the past eleven years, thousands of wounded warfighters and youth with disabilities have experienced the power of adaptive sports thanks to funding raised through the AIG Winter Summit.”

Warfighter Sports offers sports rehabilitation for severely wounded warriors in military hospitals and communities across the U.S. Since 2003, more than 10,000 of the most severely wounded and their families have been served, including those with single or multiple amputations, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, visual impairments, and significant nerve and muscle damage.

Empower Youth Sports provides youth with disabilities the opportunity to experience the power of adaptive sports. Opportunities are provided to more than 20,000 youth annually in over 50 sports through DSUSA's nationwide chapter network as well as through school-based athletic programs.

As part of DSUSA’s 50th anniversary celebration, a crew of disabled warriors will take a climb on Mt. McKinley, the tallest peak in North America, between May 6 and May 31, thanks in part to sponsorship from AIG and Willis Towers Watson.

Rob Schimek, CEO, Commercial Insurance at AIG, said, "The Winter Summit is a great event for AIG and its business partners to support and be part of Disabled Sports USA’s incredible cause. We are honored to celebrate DSUSA’s 50th year milestone at this year’s event and look forward to our continued partnership. It is an unbelievable experience to witness the hard work of this group as it helps transform and restore the lives of veterans, who made extreme sacrifices in defense and service of this country, and the lives of disabled student athletes.”
