The ITU World Triathlon San Diego, slated for April 18-20 in scenic Mission Beach, is pleased to announce that an ITU-sanctioned paratriathlon event has been added to the already-exciting race weekend.

The top paratriathletes from United States and around the globe will have the opportunity to compete in the same venue as the world's top elites inSan Diego on Saturday, April 20. The ITU paratriathlon event will utilize the same course as age-group sprint-distance race and will start immediately before the age-group sprint event.

Athletes will compete in ITU classification categories and under ITU paratriathlon rules, and the ITU World Triathlon San Diego will count toward the annual ITU Paratriathlon Rankings. Visit triathlon.org for more on the sport of paratriathlon.

Paratriathletes interested in competing in the ITU-sanctioned portion of the ITU World Triathlon San Diego must contact USA Triathlon's Paratriathlon Program Manager Amanda Duke at amanda.duke@usatriathlon.org. All entries for ITU paratriathlon events must be processed through an athletes' National Federation.

In addition, USA Triathlon will host a Physically Challenged Open wave in the age-group sprint race for paratriathletes not wishing to compete under ITU paratriathlon rules. Interested competitors can register for the Physically Challenged Open sprint-distance race via Active.com.

One of just eight ITU World Triathlon Series events around the globe in 2013, the second edition of the ITU World Triathlon San Diego will feature an Olympic-caliber elite field competing on an historic course adjacent to the birthplace of the sport.

In addition to the elite races, the event features top-flight Olympic- and sprint-distance age-group races, as well as an Olympic-distance relay and an aquabike event, offering amateurs the chance to compete in the same epic venue as the world's best athletes. The 2013 ITU World Triathlon San Diego also serves as the USA Triathlon Club National Championships.

Nearly 2,100 amateur triathletes from ages 14 to 90 from 42 states and 16 countries competed at the 2012 ITU World Triathlon San Diego. Visit sandiego.triathlon.org for more information on the 2013 event.
