USA Triathlon announced a calendar of 15 High School Triathlon State Championships spanning from June to December of 2017. The season features at least one state championship race in eight of USA Triathlon’s 10 Regions.

Each of the championship races is held as part of a larger age-group triathlon in the state, allowing young triathletes to showcase their talent against a competitive high-school field while enjoying the support of the multisport community as a whole.

“With 15 high school state championships on the docket this year, the USA Triathlon High School Program is showing enormous growth,” said USA Triathlon Chief Operating Officer Tim Yount. “Our ultimate goal is to offer championship opportunities in all 50 states, and we believe the momentum our high school triathletes create this season will help to push that effort forward.”

Race directors were selected to host high school state championships via an online application and internal review process by USA Triathlon staff. The staff considered several factors when making selections, including the current scope of the event, its date and location, history of collaboration with USA Triathlon, depth of support for high school athletes, press coverage and other deliverables that help to create a state championship atmosphere.

Registration is now open for all races, and links to each event page can be found at usatriathlon.org/highschoolprogram or in the listing below.

The USA Triathlon High School Program, officially formed in 2016, creates opportunities for high school-aged athletes of all abilities to participate in triathlon alongside their peers. The USA Triathlon High School National Championships, also launched in 2016, are held each year on the same weekend and at the same venue as the USA Triathlon Collegiate Club National Championships. The 2017 edition took place in Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Audrey Ernst (South Elgin, Ill.) and Andrew Shellenberger (Indianapolis, Ind.) took home individual national titles.

The USA Triathlon Foundation offers a High School Program Grant to support and encourage participation of high school athletes in the multisport community. Grants are available for schools or clubs wishing to launch a high school program, existing clubs in need of financial aid for race and travel fees, race directors wishing to host a high school event or wave, and coaches who want to become certified to coach youth and junior athletes.
