May 05, 2016

Registration is now open for Mad River Guide School, which will take place May 23 – 27, 2016, on the Snake River in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The five-day school is the Jackson area’s premier school for anyone looking to boost their on-river skills. Participants learn whitewater rafting and safety skills, as well as professionalism on the river. It’s the school completed by all Mad River Boat Trips guides and is designed for individuals seeking employment on the river – whether at Mad River or elsewhere – as well as anyone wishing to learn the basics of whitewater rafting.

Skills covered during training include:

  • Introduction to boat navigation with oars/paddles

  • Safety skills, including identifying hazards and exercising proper judgment in order to avoid mishaps

  • Hydrology (scientific study of the movement of water – as it applies to rivers)

  • Boat maintenance

Guide school is a hands-on learning environment, with some classroom time spent at the Mad River Wedge, the company’s boathouse. The vast majority of time is spent in the Snake River Canyon on the Snake River. Guide School requires a high level of aerobic activity in inclement conditions in a remote area. Participants should be confident in their appropriate level of fitness before applying to guide school.

The Snake River offers Class I – III rapids, meaning conditions range from easy to moderate. Rafters will experience everything from small waves on clear passages with no obstacles—perfect for all ages and abilities—to stretches with high, numerous and irregular waves that pass through narrow passages punctuated by rocks, eddies and rapids requiring experience in maneuvering.

Tuition for guide school is $395 and is due at the time of registration, which may be completed online.

In addition, Mad River offers courses for the following certifications: River Rescue, River Rescue for the Professional, Swiftwater Rescue Technician.
