Ultimate has been around since the 1970s when it was considered a counter-culture activity and has grown into medal winning sport at the World Games. Fans of the game hope it makes it into the summer Olympics! Here are a few fun facts:

  • The actual name is just ‘Ultimate’ - The name Frisbee is trademarked by Wham-O Toys to whom the inventor sold the rights many years ago, which means that Ultimate can’t really use the name Frisbee™.

  • ‘Rock, paper, scissors’ is their coin toss - There is no specific method indicated by the rules of Ultimate about how opening possession is decided, however, ‘rock, paper, scissors’ has become a popular and almost standard way of doing the coin-toss in Ultimate games.

  • Ultimate has no referees - Ultimate has no referees. The players of this sport believe in the ‘spirit of the game’ which means that all players are responsible for calling out their own fouls and not call anything unfairly. In higher level competitions, there are observers at the side of the field. These observers don’t make any calls unless a player asks for an appeal.
