Carvin School, a non-profit, college preparatory institution in Puerto Rico closely affiliated with the Puerto Rico Open, was honored by the PGA TOUR at the TOUR’s Tournament Meetings on December 7. The school will receive financial support from the PGA TOUR to help rebuild after the direct hit of Hurricane Maria in September 2017.
“In the wake of the catastrophic damage in Puerto Rico from Hurricane Maria, we are pleased to be a part of the rebuilding efforts at the Carvin School,” said PGA TOUR EVP and Chief Tournaments and Competitions Officer Andy Pazder. “Lives in Puerto Rico have changed drastically, but our hope is that helping the Carvin School as part of the island’s overall recovery efforts will restore some sense of normalcy back to those families.”
After category-5 Hurricane Maria made a direct hit on the island, the school suffered structural damage and was left without power, school supplies, furniture and technology.
Since 2008, the Carvin School has been crucial to the success of the PGA TOUR’s Puerto Rico Open, with students serving as standard bearers and walking scorers, in addition to assisting other committees. Carvin School alumni often return to volunteer at the event at Coco Beach Golf Club.
The Carvin School aims to “prepare students to become well-rounded human beings capable of meeting the challenge of life by functioning efficiently in a bilingual, multi-cultural, and technological society” by combining arts, sports and involvement in the community with the academic curriculum. Over half of the students entering college-level institutions in Puerto Rico, never graduate, with only 41 percent of four-year students in public universities and 33 percent in private institutions earning a diploma. The Carvin School hopes to change this trend one student at a time.
Golf has played a big role for the Carvin School, as the only school on the island of Puerto Rico that has its own practice putting green. The school uses the game of golf to instill core values such as honesty, sportsmanship, respect and responsibility. The Carvin School has supported the Puerto Rico Open since the tournament’s inception in 2008.
