At a media event at PPG Paints Arena, representatives from SportsPITTSBURGH and the Pittsburgh Bid Committee, along with elected officials, discussed the community-based bid approach that resulted in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), yesterday, awarding Pittsburgh 22 NCAA preliminary and championship events covering the years 2018 through 2022. Pittsburgh was awarded more NCAA events than any other city.
“We are beyond excited that the NCAA has chosen our city to host these 22 prestigious events,” said Jennifer Hawkins, executive director of sports development for VisitPITTSBURGH. “This announcement is not about any one university, sports venue or organization. It’s about Pittsburgh! The Pittsburgh Bid Committee -- which included nine universities, two athletic conferences and nine sports facilities -- approached the bid process as a community effort to reintroduce the NCAA to Pittsburgh. And now we look forward to crowning new NCAA champions over the next four years.”
“The city of Pittsburgh and their member institutions submitted many very strong bids, and our sport committees were impressed with the opportunities that were presented for the championships,” said Joni Comstock, NCAA senior vice president for championships. “We look forward to working with them and so many other cities who commit their expertise and resources in providing our student-athletes, coaches and spectators a memorable experience."
