The West Michigan Sports Commission welcomed Jamie Schlagel, formerly assistant athletics director of game and event operations at Grand Valley State University, as its new national sports sales manager.
“Jamie is perfectly suited to fill this position focused on bringing more youth and amateur sporting events to the region,” said Mike Guswiler, President of the West Michigan Sports Commission. “Her experience in attracting and hosting athletic events at the collegiate level is directly relevant to what she’ll be helping us accomplish.”
Schlagel brings sports leadership skills from serving in senior positions of athletic departments at three universities. She most recently worked at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) as assistant athletics director of game and event operations, where she managed everything from developing national bid presentations and managing site visits for prospective clients considering bringing their athletic events to GVSU, to working with the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) to host events such as the 2014 NCAA DII Outdoor Track and Field Championships and the 2014 NCAA DII Men's National Golf Championship. Prior to that position, she worked as assistant to the athletics director in facilities and game operations at Upper Iowa University, coordinating, directing and supervising all aspects of event management including managing staff, the master event schedule, plus contractual agreements. While pursuing her master’s degree in sports management, she was a game operations intern at GVSU and an event management and operations grad assistant in the athletic department at Minnesota State University.
“I had the privilege of working with the West Michigan Sports Commission during my role with GVSU, and I was so impressed not only by the quantity and quality of sporting events they brought to West Michigan, but by the caliber and professionalism of their staff,” said Schlagel. “I have loved my time at GVSU, but I am excited to be a part of this team that will allow me to put my sports management skills to work in attracting events that will be hosted all around the region, including at GVSU.”
Schlagel received her bachelor’s degree in recreation and sport management with a coaching minor at St. Cloud State University where she also played volleyball, after which she received a master’s degree in sport management at Minnesota State University. Schlagel is a Midwest native, born and raised in North Branch, Minnesota.
Schlagel is the second person to fill this position created for the commission in 2013. Former national sports sales manager Peggy Keiper recently accepted a position as an assistant professor at Central Michigan University, where she will start teaching in the fall after training Schlagel.
