Upper Chesapeake Bay Added to Schedule for 2018

Harford County will host the well-known Bassmaster Elite Series for the first time July 26-29, 2018. The Bassmaster Elite Series has a history of combining traditional and new locations to make the annual event exciting to participants and spectators.  Greg Pizzuto, Visit Harford Director, stated: “The selection process is highly competitive. We were selected for one of the 12 events awarded. To be one of these is exciting for the region. Cecil County hosted the event in 2015, and the expertise gained there will be helpful as part of the planning.”  It was in 2015 on the Chesapeake Bay when Aaron Martens all but sealed his third Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year title, scoring a dramatic victory with total weight of 70 pounds, 2 ounces.

B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin said, “We are very serious about taking bass fishing into new regions of the country and exposing as many people to our sport as we can.” The event includes four days of competitive fishing, bringing in a positive economic investment in the area from the competitors and spectators, and requires over a year of planning.  County Executive Barry Glassman stated: “We welcome this new attraction and the opportunity for visitors to explore Harford County. In the year ahead, we will be working together with our public and private partners to deliver a spectacular experience for tourists and local citizens alike.”

The tournament will utilize Havre de Grace as the the launch point for anglers.  An unusual feature for this tournament is that the weigh-in will take place at a different location.  Ripken Stadium is providing facilities to accommodate the excitement of the weigh-in as well as a family festival for the final three days of the event.

The tournament draws anglers and hardcore fans as well as media coverage.  It also is a fun adventure for spectators and fans from around the region.  There will be events planned for families.  The multiple locations will allow tourists and locals to navigate the area.  “It will be an opportunity for Havre de Grace to showcase not only its ideal Bay location but also its historic links.” said Lauri Orzewicz, Manager of Havre de Grace Tourism.
