New England’s first major Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) U.S. Women’s Disc Golf Championship (USWDGC), presented by Sabattus Disc Golf and INNOVA Champion Discs, takes place at the Sabattus Disc Golf Course, on September 23-25, 2016. This year, the PDGA celebrates 40 years as the professional association for all disc golfers. This rapidly growing sport is drawing 100 competitors to the tournament; two-thirds are traveling from well beyond New England with California, Colorado, Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, Ontario, Texas and Wisconsin currently represented.

Sabattus Disc Golf and PDGA tournament sponsors are proud to support the Dempsey Center which improves the Quality of Life of anyone impacted by cancer. Tournament proceeds will be gifted to the Dempsey Center which provides a personalized, holistic and integrative approach to cancer prevention, education and support. Support services provided complement treatments, and support caregivers, patients and their families equally.

Two Maine breweries have also joined in the USWDGC excitement to support this great cause. Gritty McDuff’s, a long-time and dedicated supporter of the Dempsey Center, is a sponsor of the PDGA tournament and will be providing their “Dempsey’s Courage Ale” for opening ceremonies and during a disc golf players’ dinner prepared by Moe’s Original Bar B Que. Gritty’s support of the Dempsey Center is extensive, they have their own cycling team in the Dempsey Challenge, an annual run, walk, cycle fundraising experience, and they donate $1 from each pint sold of their Dempsey Courage Ale. Additionally, Gritty McDuff’s supports the efforts of various other organizations that raise funds for the Dempsey Challenge by offering the use of their Auburn Brew Pub for “community pint nights.”

Another unique brew has been created specifically for this year’s PDGA tournament: Peter Ruby, owner of Sabattus Disc Golf Course, played an instrumental role in a collaboration formed between Baxter Brewing Co., Lewiston, a Journey Sponsor of the Dempsey Challenge, and disc golfers “from away” resulting in an IPA brewed to benefit the Dempsey Center.

Avery Jenkins, disc golf champion and brother of Valarie Jenkins, 4-time Disc Golf World Champion, introduced the idea of brewing an IPA to Ruby who brought the idea to Adrienne Nichols, Director of Marketing, Baxter Brewing Co. Nichols felt this opportunity aligned with the recent rebranding of Baxter Brewing to reach more outdoor enthusiasts. Husband and wife duo, Nate Doss, 3-time Disc Golf World Champion and Valarie Jenkins World Champion, were invited from Bend, Oregon, to collaborate with Baxter Brewing on a limited release red IPA.

This recipe’s symbolic name will be unveiled at the time of the tournament. Doss and Jenkins will return to Maine in order for Jenkins to compete in the U.S. Women’s Disc Golf Championship.

This collaboration and the volume of in-kind donations for the tournament events is a clear illustration of the impact a small business in Maine can have on bringing people together to create a sense of community.

The Maine Office of Tourism is a sponsor of the U.S. Women’s Disc Golf Championship.
