Tallahassee Announces Eco-Friendly Running Event

Sustainable Tallahassee will host the Seventh Annual Trash Dash at Apalachee Regional Park at 9 a.m. on Oct. 28, 2017. A Gulf Winds Track Club Grand Prix event for 2017, the 5k running event acts as a fundraiser to support the organization’s mission of promoting environmental stewardship and economic vitality in our community through education and collaboration. This year’s event offers participants and spectators a special opportunity to witness world class collegiate racing prior to the race. The NJCAA Region 8 and FCSAA State Cross Country Championships will be taking place at Apalachee Regional Park on the same morning as the Trash Dash. All are encourage to arrive early to cheer on runners from across the state, including Tallahassee Community College, as they compete.

The organization will reprise two of last year’s popular campaigns in honor of the Trash Dash. Local community members will be able to donate old athletic and running shoes, as well as awards and medals, to be upcycled in the spirit of green living. Used and new athletic shoes, awards and medals will be collected on race day.

“Going green is not limited to just recycling, and we’re so excited to see participants come out year after year to run and learn about how to create a sustainable city in all facets of their lifestyle and community,” said Jim Davis, executive director of Sustainable Tallahassee. “Running is a spectacular way to get out and enjoy the beauty of nature, and see why it’s so important for us to preserve our planet.”

This event is a partnership between Sustainable Tallahassee and Leon County, will also include other fun activities for the participants and their families.
