The 2018 Sunshine State Games Schedule of Events features more than 30 sports in 19 different Florida communities. Now in its 39th year, the Games are an Olympic-style sports festival offering Floridians of all ages the opportunity to compete in a wide variety of sports.

Competition began in February with the Sunshine State Games Dominoes Championship in North Lauderdale. The schedule picks up again in April, with competition running through November. The busiest schedule will be between May 18 and July 1, when events will be held in six of the seven weekends during that time.

“The Sunshine State Games are played at some of the finest athletic venues the state has to offer,” said Florida Sports Foundation President Angela Suggs. “Athletes might compete indoors at spacious and state-of-the-art facilities. Or they might test themselves outdoors on our pristine waters, beautiful grass fields or well-maintained courts.”

The Sunshine State Games began in 1980 as an opportunity to give amateur athletes a starting point on their way to national and international competitions, including the Olympic Games. In 2016, three Floridians – Ryan Lochte, Ashleigh Johnson and Angelica Delgado – participated in the Olympics after beginning their journey at the Sunshine State Games. Lochte, from Daytona Beach, won a gold medal in swimming. Johnson, from Miami, won gold as the goalkeeper for the U.S. water polo team. And Delgado, also from Miami, was a member of the U.S. Olympic judo team.
