Colorado to Host Mavic Haute Route Rockies 2017

13 Oct, 2016

One of the most incredible cycling events for amateur riders will come to Colorado next summer, and the exciting final stage and finish will take place in Colorado Springs, hosted by the Colorado Springs Sports Corporation.

"This will be one of the world's most prominent amateur cycling events and we are proud to host the finish of the inaugural event as it completes its unforgettable journey through Colorado and six host cities," said Doug Martin, the Chief Operating Officer of the Sports Corp. "Our city has hosted a long list of great cycling events, but this one promises to be something special."

Mavic Haute Route Rockies 2017 will feature seven timed, ranked and fully-supported stages from Saturday, June 24 to Friday, June 30. The Start Village opens on Friday, June 23.

Modeled after OC Sport's three successful events in Europe - Haute Route Alps, Pyrénées, and Dolomites - Mavic Haute Route Rockies is set for its inaugural run in 2017 with six host cities in Colorado on the route. As many as 600 cyclists are expected.

Carving through the heartland of American cycling, the Mavic Haute Route Rockies 2017 will feature an unforgettable combination of jaw-dropping scenery and breathtaking climbs. The event offers committed amateur riders the opportunity to compete with a professional level of off-the-bike support unprecedented in U.S. amateur cycling.

The event starts in Boulder on June 24, and finishes in Colorado Springs on June 30. Competitors face seven timed and ranked stages covering 550 miles (875km) and in excess of 52,500 vertical feet (16,000 meters) of climbing on some of Colorado's best known mountain roads, many soaring above 10,000 feet in altitude (3,000 meters). Riders will be supported throughout by an unsurpassed level of professional race support both on and off the bike.

Stage 1: Boulder - Boulder

Stage 2: Boulder - Winter Park

Stage 3: Winter Park - Avon

Stage 4: Avon - Avon (Individual Time Trial)

Stage 5: Avon - Snowmass Village

Stage 6: Snowmass Village - Crested Butte

Stage 7: TBD - Colorado Springs

Influenced by Colorado's rich cycling culture, sections of dirt and gravel road (approximately 15% of the course) will add a new dimension to the Haute Route proposition but these can still be negotiated on a standard road bike.

A point-to-point event, the Mavic Haute Route Rockies offers a unique platform for committed amateur cyclists to set themselves a defining challenge, while taking in the spectacular Colorado canvas of high plains, deep canyons, lush forests and spectacular mountain roads that are ingrained in the fabric of American road cycling.

Riders will benefit from full mechanical assistance from the event's Title Partner Mavic - drawing on decades of experience supporting the pro peloton in cycling's Grand Tours - in addition to daily stage timings, feed stations and Mavic's exclusive event jersey and bib shorts. Off the bike, daily massages, food in the race village and transfer of luggage to accommodation between stages is provided - all hallmarks of the comprehensive event support experienced by riders in the European Haute Route series since 2011.

The full course will be revealed in the coming months, as permits are obtained through the necessary governing entities.
