Cottage Grove, Ore. - A new European-style bike event, combining both competitive and recreational riding experiences, will roll out in Eugene, Oregon’s nearby town of Cottage Grove on June 2.
The 2012 Oregon Gran Fondo cycling event will reflect an age-old tradition that originated in France and Italy where cyclists of all ages and abilities are invited to ride a stage of a professional grand tour, such as the Tour de France.
Both elite riders and non-competitive cyclists will be able to choose from a variety of courses that wind through the area’s beautiful scenic countryside and forests. While local racing teams and competitive cyclists might tackle the 117-mile course, with more than 8,000 feet of climbing, novice riders of all ages might choose the less demanding 32-mile course. In between is a 71-mile course with 4,800 feet of climbing.
Riders will get a police-escorted, mass start down Main Street at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 2, from the start-finish line in Bohemia Park. The event features chip timing with overall results and age-category results. The event will also feature charity breakfasts, an expo, raffles and prizes.
The presenting sponsors are Eugene companies Co-Motion Cycles, which makes hand-crafted bicycles, and Rolf Prima, a manufacturer of premium hand-built bicycle wheels. Additional sponsors include Eugene’s Oakshire Brewing and Hutch’s Bicycles Eugene.
